How much does custom software cost in Southeast Wisconsin and Northern Illinois?
Agencies quote $40,000 and up for even a small build. Most local businesses need something much smaller: an automation, a booking flow, a dashboard. We build those from Elkhorn, WI at $100 an hour, projects from $297, always estimated first. Here is what moves the price, and a calculator.

Every project gets a short written scope with an estimate in hours. You approve the quote before any work starts, and the estimate changes in writing before more hours are spent.

about 3 hours of build
Custom tools and automations beyond a standard install: a custom booking flow, a form that feeds your pipeline, a workflow between the apps you already use, a report that runs itself.
Built on AWS the same way we run our own products. Anything that needs to keep running is hosted at cost plus a small hosting line agreed in the quote. Not taxable in Wisconsin.
What moves the price
Five things that change what custom software costs
How many screens and steps
The biggest factor. A form with one action is hours. A booking flow with a calendar, reminders and payments is days. A portal with logins, roles and history is weeks. Count the screens and the things each one does.
What it connects to
Every outside system (your calendar, QuickBooks, Square, a CRM, a text service) is its own piece of work. Tools with good public APIs are quick. Tools with none mean a workaround or a different tool.
Logins and data
Anything customers or staff sign in to needs accounts, permissions and a database. That roughly doubles a project versus a tool only you use.
Build or buy
Sometimes the honest answer is a $30 a month off-the-shelf tool set up right, and we will say so in the scope. Custom is for the thing no tool does the way you work.
Keeping it running
A one-time tool costs nothing after delivery. Anything that runs on a schedule or serves customers needs hosting on AWS, quoted in the scope, and occasional updates at the hourly rate.
Changes mid-build
New ideas during a build are normal. We write them up as a change to the estimate before building them, so the number you approved is the number you pay unless you choose to add something.

What would your project cost?
Describe the shape of it. You get a range in hours and dollars; the exact number comes from a written scope.
Ranges are built from the hours similar projects have estimated at, at $100 an hour with a $297 minimum. Your quote is a fixed estimate from a written scope, approved before any work starts. Not taxable in Wisconsin.
Questions owners ask
Custom software cost questions from Wisconsin and Illinois business owners
How much does custom software cost for a small business?
Published 2026 guides put agency projects at $40,000 to $120,000 for even a small build, and US developer rates at $55 to $250 an hour. For the tools a local business actually needs, a custom booking flow, an automated workflow, a quote form that feeds your pipeline, an internal dashboard, Denecke Media builds at $100 an hour with projects starting at $297, and every project is estimated before any work starts.
Why is your rate so much lower than an agency?
No office, no account managers, no 12-week discovery phase. We run two SaaS products of our own on AWS (PointWiseSystem and LeadWiseSystem) and build client tools the same way, with the same stack, so there is nothing to learn on your dime.
What does 'estimated first' mean?
You describe what you need, we write a short scope with a fixed estimate in hours, and you approve the quote before anything is built. If the scope changes, the estimate changes in writing before more hours are spent. No surprise invoices.
What kinds of things do you build?
Custom booking and intake flows, forms that drop straight into your pipeline, automations between the tools you already pay for, internal dashboards and reports, customer portals, small web apps, and AWS cloud setups. Anything bigger than a standard install on a website.
Is there an ongoing cost?
Only if what we build needs to run somewhere. It runs on AWS, billed at cost plus a small hosting line we agree on in the quote. Nothing recurring is added without being on the quote.
Is custom software taxable in Wisconsin?
No. Custom software and development work are not subject to Wisconsin sales tax.
How long does it take?
A small automation is usually days. A booking flow or portal is a few weeks. The estimate includes a delivery target and you see working pieces as we go.
